Anna Soifer, doctoral candidate in Archaeology and the Ancient World, was selected for the Excellence in Teaching Award for her notable achievements as both a scholar and instructor. This accolade celebrates her exceptional commitment to fostering learning and inspiring students within the field of archaeology.

Candace Rice, Assistant Professor of Archaeology and Classics at the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World (JIAAW), has been lauded for her outstanding dedication to mentoring graduate students. Selected for the 2024 Faculty Award for Advising & Mentoring, Rice's commitment to guiding the academic and professional growth of her students has garnered this recognition.

In a momentous recognition of his unwavering dedication and exceptional contributions, Charles Carroll ’19 Ph.D. has been awarded the 2024 Wilson-DeBlois award. An alumnus of Brown University himself, Carroll’s selection for this honor by the Graduate Student Council underscores his profound impact on the graduate student community at Brown.

The Joukowsky dissertation award in the Life Sciences goes to Cel Welch, who completed their Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering this spring. Through their dissertation, titled Novel Devices, Physical Mechanisms, and Analytical Techniques for Use in Next Generation Cellular Diagnostics, Welch developed novel electrical and acoustic methods to process tissue into single cells for direct sequencing.

Giulia Buccione, who completed her Ph.D. in Economics in May of 2024, is recognized for her dissertation, Culture, Agency, and Water: Essays on the Development of the Middle East and North Africa. She was selected for the Joukowsky Family Foundation Outstanding Dissertation Award in the social sciences.

Laura Lark is set to graduate with a doctoral degree in Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences, marking a significant milestone in an already notable career. She was selected for the Joukowsky Family Foundation Outstanding Dissertation Award in the physical sciences. Her dissertation is titled, Influence of Compositional Structure on Planetary Geological Evolution.   

A trailblazer in the field of therapeutic genome editing, Fyodor D. Urnov’s research focuses on developing medicines for devastating genetic diseases.

Mariajosé Rodríguez-Pliego ‘23 Ph.D. completed her doctoral degree in Comparative Literature last summer, earning her degree in October of 2023. Her dissertation, Foundational Futures: Nationhood, Migration and Environment in the Literatures of Abiayala was selected for the Joukowsky Family Foundation Outstanding Dissertation Award in the humanities.

Alba Lara Granero, a doctoral candidate in Hispanic Studies, has been lauded with the 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award for her exceptional contributions to the classroom. With a teaching portfolio spanning across all levels of her program’s curriculum, Lara Granero has demonstrated unwavering dedication and innovation in her approach to education

In a testament to her unwavering commitment to academic excellence and student wellbeing, Susan Moffitt, Professor of Political Science and International and Public Affairs and Director of Academic Programs for the Watson Institute of International and Public Affairs, has been selected for the 2024 Faculty Award for Advising & Mentoring.

Elizabeth Harrington, Professor of Medicine, Research Scholar, and Associate Dean of the Office of Graduate Studies, Division of Biology and Medicine, came to Brown in 1997 and has been making an impact as a researcher and mentor ever since.

In recognition of his commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment, Daniel E. Ibarra, Manning Assistant Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences and Environment and Society, has been selected for the Graduate School Faculty Award for Advising and Mentoring in the physical sciences.

Associate Dean Maria Suarez has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Student Accessibility Services (SAS) Collaborative Partner Award for her outstanding contributions to fostering inclusive environments and expanding opportunities for students with disabilities at Brown University.

Four doctoral students at Brown are recipients of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s prestigious Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study.

The Gilliam Fellows Program supports graduates who are committed to advancing equity and inclusion in science and empowers them as future leaders in scientific fields through financial assistance for three years of doctoral research. It also supports faculty thesis advisers to enhance their mentorship skills and ability to develop more inclusive training environments.

Britt Threatt, a doctoral candidate in Africana Studies and Senior Writing Associate at the Writing Center, is working to increase the accessibility of college writing resources with two innovative projects: the College Writing, Actually podcast and the Multilingual Mondays Instagram series.

Madhuri Dugyala, who is new to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) this Fall, is playing a pivotal role in improving access to mental health services for graduate students. She dedicates three days per week for graduate students, including appointments at Horace Mann on Mondays. She is also leading outreach events and workshops designed for the unique needs of graduate students. 

Four Brown doctoral students have been recognized with the prestigious NIH Blueprint and BRAIN Initiative Diversity Specialized Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Advancement in Neuroscience Awards, commonly known as D-SPAN, over the past several years. These awards aim to foster diversity and excellence in neuroscience research.

Debuting this year, ten students were selected to serve as peer mentors for new international students over the course of the 2023-2024 academic year. Students were paired up and asked to plan and execute one event. This pilot program is sponsored by the Graduate School and Global Brown Center for International Students.

The Brown University/Trinity Repertory Company MFA Programs in Acting and Directing presents Two in Rep: two fall productions playing in rotating repertory featuring the programs' students. True West by Sam Shepard, directed by MFA in Directing candidate Tara Moses, runs November 2 – 11. One Flea Spare by Naomi Wallace, directed by MFA in Directing candidate Sharifa Yasmin, runs November 3 – 12.

Chris Gilbody administers financial aid for graduate students, ensuring the timely processing of financial aid applications and managing the overall counseling efforts and communication strategies to graduate programs from the Office of Financial Aid.

Pursuing research in the field of precision oncology, medical student Samuel Nussenzweig was recently awarded the prestigious Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship for the current academic year.

Announced in late summer, Ji Soo Hong was one of five students selected for the National Institute of Social Sciences (NISS) Dissertation Grant. Hong is a doctoral candidate in History studying the economic and environmental history of the USSR as well as the history of U.S.-Soviet relations. 

Doctoral candidate in History, Phoebe Labat will spend the academic year (through June of 2024) in the French city of Aix-en-Provence, which is home to the Archives Nationales D'outre-Mer (ANOM), France's overseas archives and recent graduate Owen Manahan is working as an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) with children in grades 4-6 in Puebla City, Mexico.

Newly minted graduate Shanelle Haile defended her dissertation this summer, will receive her degree this October, and was selected as New Alumni Trustee by the Corporation in the Spring. She’s also starting a new job in Boston next month. It’s been a very busy year for Haile, who is exceptionally modest about everything she’s accomplished.

Diane Hoffman-Kim’s lab publishes on stroke therapy screening, showing that their “mini-brains” can serve important purposes in disease research.

His dissertation, Islamic Intersections: Religion and Politics in Kashmir in the Long Twentieth-Century, focuses on the previously unexamined lives and thoughts of poets, educators, ulema (Muslim scholars), activists, rebels, and revolutionaries in Kashmir. Yaseen is the Joukowsky Prize winner for the social sciences

Kiara Lee will graduate with a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering and a master’s degree in Global Public health, which she earned through the Open Graduate Education Program. Her dissertation, Leveraging Biotransport Mechanisms in the Design of Technologies to Improve Access to Blood-Based Diagnostics, was selected for the Joukowsky Prize in the life sciences.

Anant Hariharan was selected for his impacts to the fields of seismology, tectonics, and geodynamics through his dissertation, Understanding Overtone Interference in Surface Wave Measurements: Application to Anisotropic Imaging of the Uppermost Mantle Beneath North America.

Dennis Hogan, who completed his degree in Comparative Literature in September of 2022, is recognized for his dissertation, The Queen of Two Worlds: Crisis and Creation in the Central American Transit Zones, 1848-1914. He was selected for the Joukowsky Prize in the humanities.

Recognized for strengthening the international graduate student community and working tirelessly to bring positivity, clarity, and enthusiasm to the graduate community, Andrew Heald and Kerry Sabbag are winners of this year's Bates-Clapp and Wilson-DeBlois awards (respectively) from the Graduate Student Council.

Patrick Heller's nominators, all 18 of them, emphasize his genuine interest in their studies, his intense care and support for them as academics and people, and his patience and support as they work through ideas, projects, and navigate academic challenges and pandemic disruptions.

Professor of English, Kevin Quashie, was nominated by several students, who are among the many he formally and informally advises at Brown. Each student nominator provides a personal and detailed account of Quashie’s mentorship, sharing how they felt supported and encouraged both academically, and as unique individuals.

As a mentor, Jessica Plavicki has contributed to the academic and career development of early career scientists from high school to the postdoctoral level.
