Zak earned his PhD from Brown in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry (MCB). He studied the cells that give rise to eggs and sperm using marine animals. Today, his research focus has expanded to the sea star. He reflects on how his time at Brown has shaped his early research career.

Robert (Bobby) Thorn is a recent graduate of the Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry (MCB) program at Brown. His dissertation focused on the brain and behavioral development and regeneration of zebrafish.

Johnny Page is from Storrs, Connecticut. He received his undergraduate degrees in Music with a focus on History, Theory and Composition and in Neuroscience from Brown University. While pursuing his Master’s, he continues combining his passion for music and science.

Joseph Meisel, a higher education leader, historian and humanities scholar was appointed in October 2018 as the Joukowsky Family University Librarian at Brown. He previously served as the Deputy Provost for eight years. Hear his thoughts on the new role and ways to enhance current and future services for graduate students.

As Associate Dean of Students and Director of Student and Employee Accessibility Services (SEAS), Catherine Axe ’87, along with her colleagues Jonathan Corey and Desirae Mix coordinate disability related accommodations and services at Brown.

Although many colleges and universities, including Brown, have taken steps towards increasing diversity in their student populations, Latino students are still severely underrepresented in higher education and more so in advanced degree fields.

Abdulwahab is from Makkah, Saudi Arabia, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Physics from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.

Kumar is the Assistant Director for Co-Curricular Initiatives, Brown Center for Students of Color.

This fall, Brown University just welcomed its largest cohort of graduate students of color to date.

Amanda is from Springfield, MA and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Skidmore College.

Adam is the Cyber Division Chief for the Washington Air National Guard and is currently stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, south of Seattle. He has 16 years of experience providing technical-focused IT services and cyber defense for the U.S. Army and Air Force.

Eight doctoral students were awarded Global Mobility Research Fellowships for the 2018-19 academic year:

J.R. has a bachelor’s degree in Geological Sciences from Cornell and earned his master’s and PhD in Geological Sciences at Brown. While earning his PhD, he studied the history and formation of Mars, partnered with NASA to map the planet’s mineralogy, and traveled to some of the most Mars-like places on Earth, including the Dry Valleys of Antarctica and the volcanoes of Hawaii.

When I arrived on Brown’s campus two years ago, I was eager to get involved with the community and help others as I’ve been helped time and time again on my journey as a seasoned international student.

Beginning in late fall of 2016, PhD students could apply to take courses in a department outside their own to complete a certificate program.

The Graduate School has partnered with the Neuroscience department to host four students in an NIH-funded Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP). The Graduate School received more than 90 applicants for the four slots.

Silvia E. Giorguli Saucedo ’04 Ph.D. is the 2018 recipient of the Horace Mann Medal. Giorguli is the first female president of El Colegio de México (Colmex), the top research and teaching university for social sciences and humanities in Mexico.

Catherine Hanni and Carin Algava are receiving Graduate Student Council awards for staff members who make a difference for graduate students.

Three students will receive the Graduate School’s fourth annual master's prizes, with Andrew S. Campbell to be recognized for academic accomplishment; Joyce Sunday for engaged citizenship and community service; and David Aaron for professional excellence.

Keisha-Khan Perry received the 2018 Graduate School Faculty Award for Advising and Mentoring at the University Awards Ceremony in April.

Eight PhD students were selected for the interdisciplinary Open Graduate Education program, which provides the flexibility and resources to pursue a master’s degree in a secondary field while they earn their doctorates.

As Program Director for the International Student Experience (ISE), Christina Phillips focuses on student advocacy, organization advising, and community-building initiatives, including new student orientations for all international students at Brown.

Antonio is originally from San Jose, CA, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from San Francisco State University and a master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of San Francisco. He also holds a Coordinator role at Student and Employee Accessibility Services in the division of Campus Life.

Samantha Lash is a doctoral student in Archeology, while also a master’s student in Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences (DEEPs) through the Open Graduate Education Program. The combination of the two fields is unusual at first glance.

American Studies students Julian Saporiti and Erin Aoyama have a novel approach to presenting their research outside the academy.

Maija Hallsmith has joined the Graduate School in a new position to support diversity recruitment and retention programming. She assists with planning diversity-related events and partnering with other groups and offices on campus.

John P. Donoghue, the Henry Merritt Wriston Professor and director of the Brown Institute for Brain Science, has been elected to fellowship in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Donoghue, a pioneer researcher in brain-computer interface, is the 34th current Brown faculty member elected to AAAS fellowship.
