Graduate School

Community and Leadership

Brown’s programs enable students to create community around common academic interests, identities and values. The Graduate School’s goal is not only to identify and bring together a broad range of exceptionally talented students, faculty and staff to Brown, but also to support that diversity to advance the University’s core mission of education and discovery.

Graduate School Programs

To achieve our aspirations as a community, it is imperative that all members are valued, respected and provided with equal opportunities to thrive at Brown. The Graduate School provides a variety of opportunities for doctoral students to lead and build community.

A strong graduate student experience is a core element in the roadmap of the Division of Campus Life, Charting the Path for Student Success. The division creates the connections and conditions necessary to develop a greater sense of community for nearly 3,000 graduate students who attend Brown each year. The division leads programming and community-building in the Student Activities Office and the identity centers.

In response to the recommendations of the Task Force on Anti-Black Racism, this pilot grant supports programs and initiatives across campus initiated by graduate students that chiefly support the Black diaspora in the Brown University community, but also work to address or benefit the Black diaspora in the greater Providence community and beyond. The grant will reopen in the Spring of 2025.

Campus Partner Programs

There are many ways to get involved in the Brown University community, including supporting multi-level student organizations, participating in student government, becoming a mentor or academic advisor or engaging with a variety of campus initiatives.

The Brown Center for Students of Color (BCSC) provides opportunities for graduate students of color to gather, network, mentor and build support networks throughout the graduate experience.
Brown Votes is a nonpartisan, University-wide, collective impact initiative committed to fostering democratic participation across campus and beyond.
The Graduate Student Council (GSC) of Brown University is the student government organization for Brown’s graduate student community. The council’s primary aims are to foster a sense of community, to facilitate collective action on graduate student-related issues and to be a voice for the graduate community within the University and the Providence area.
Graduate students form clubs and organizations around a wide variety of interests, from academic topics to groups around shared cultures, identities and interests. The Graduate Student Council (GSC) manages a list of official groups on its website; students can apply to form a new group and receive funding support from the GSC.
The Graduate Student Initiative (GSI) of the Undocumented, First Generation College, and Low-Income Student (U-FLi) Center fosters a sense of community among graduate, medical, and professional students at Brown University.
