Graduate School Faculty Award for Advising & Mentoring

In order to recognize the significant contributions of Brown University faculty members as advisors or mentors to graduate students, the Graduate School invites nominations on behalf of any Brown faculty member who has served as a graduate advisor, unofficial or official mentor, trainer, or dissertation chair for the Graduate School Faculty Award for Advising & Mentoring.

The Graduate School will make up to four awards for mentoring and advising contributions within each of Brown University’s four disciplinary divisions: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Nomination Process

Nominations should provide a comprehensive picture of the nominee’s mentoring and advising activities. To that end, each nomination submission may include up to three additional letters of support for the nominee. Letter writers are encouraged to review the Graduate School's Advising and Mentoring resources, as these reflect the broad and variegated scope of what it means to be an effective mentor and advisor at Brown University. Individual letters may have multiple signatories and may come from faculty, students, and staff. Submissions that feature a cross-section of the Brown University community speaking to a nominee’s accomplishments as a mentor and advisor broadly understood have the best chance of providing reviewers with a comprehensive picture of those accomplishments.

The recipient is honored at the annual University Awards Ceremony.

Nominations should be made through UFunds, found under the Graduate Student and Alumni Awards button.
