Through more than a dozen nominations, students emphasized the significant contributions Tripathi has made to Brown’s research community. Students and junior faculty alike credit his unique mentorship approach with not only advancing their academic careers but also shaping them into well-rounded scientists prepared for leadership roles.
“He is an extraordinarily supportive mentor who consistently makes time for his students, providing regular one-on-one guidance that fosters both personal and professional growth. His mentorship goes beyond academic success—he actively encourages us to expand our skills, refine our expertise, and accelerate our careers,” says Ph.D. student Sarah Planchak.
Creating a Culture of Innovation
Through regular meetings, Tripathi helps mentees overcome obstacles, refine their ideas, and achieve academic excellence. Nominees share that he fosters an inclusive environment by encouraging participation from individuals of all backgrounds and ensuring that every voice is heard.
Students under Tripathi's guidance have produced numerous publications, secured competitive grants, and presented their work at prestigious international conferences, including the Society of Laboratory Automation and Screening Conference, The Essential Protein and Antibody Engineering Summit, and the Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease Conference.
Breaking Down Research Silos
Jennifer Pollock, a Ph.D. candidate in biomedical engineering, emphasizes Tripathi's dedication to breaking down traditional research silos. “Professor Tripathi actively encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together diverse perspectives to solve complex research challenges. His leadership has led to the formation of dynamic research teams within his group that consistently push the boundaries of innovation, reflecting a broader commitment to advancing both our institution’s reputation and the field at large.”
Early Professional Development
Tripathi's commitment to early professional development is distinctive. Doctoral students in his laboratory gain hands-on mentoring experience by managing undergraduate research projects. Additionally, because his research group receives significant private sector funding, students deliver weekly presentations to industry sponsors—providing invaluable experience in communication and project management long before they enter the job market.
Building Scientific Community
“Professor Tripathi’s personal commitment to his students is legendary. You’ll see him in his labs at any time of the day or night – including weekends – working along with his students. He’s just tireless in his efforts to bring out the best in his students. He builds a real community in his research group, a community where every member of the group supports and learns from all the other members,” shares Larry Larson, Professor of Engineering.
Tripathi also received the Meenakshi Narain Excellence in Research Mentoring Award, which recognizes outstanding dedication to mentoring undergraduate researchers. It is notable that he was recognized for both graduate and undergraduate mentoring in the same year.
Faculty members Paul Testa, Johanna Hanink, Stephanie Jones and Anubhav Tripathi receive the Graduate School’s Faculty Award for Advising & Mentoring at the University Awards Ceremony on April 30, 2025.
