Student Health & Wellness

Brown Student Health & Wellness holistically engages students in collaborative and compassionate care to support their self discovery, intellectual growth and lifelong well-being.

Student Health & Wellness Resources

BEMS is a blended volunteer/paid service licensed by the State of Rhode Island to provide 24/7 basic and advanced prehospital care to anyone requesting emergency aid through the Brown Communications Center. Our service area is the Brown campus or remote student or academic occupancies in Providence. BEMS personnel are trained and equipped to provide the same level of services as all EMS agencies in Rhode Island.
BWell supports the development of skills for lifelong, holistic health and wellbeing for all Brown students by offering interventions that are both community- and evidence-informed, and rooted in social justice to empower growth and the ability to thrive, prevent health disparities, and respond to emergent needs.
CAPS takes a goal-focused and collaborative approach to mental health services. They provide a range of services including brief and intermittent psychological treatment, mental health support, medication management, training and consultation for faculty and staff, crisis stabilization, 24/7 support, outreach programming, and groups. With a diverse staff, CAPS offers a range of treatment and prevention services.
SAS coordinates and facilitates services for all students with medical, physical, psychological and learning disabilities. Services for students with documented disabilities or medical conditions are coordinated through SAS and the accommodations are implemented by the Brown University community. Accommodations and services are provided based on student needs and are determined on a case-by-case basis.
Student Health Services provides holistic care that is respectful of students' personal, cultural and social identities. Health professionals offer visits for urgent and routine care, 24/7 nursing advice and on-site lab, pharmacy and X-ray services. In-person care and laboratory hours are subject to change during summer, holidays and inclement weather. Visit the website to see current hours and make an appointment.

Additional Information

Medications

The Student Health Services pharmacy carries prescription medications and over-the-counter products. To fill a prescription, the pharmacy requires a written or telephone prescription from a student’s health care provider. Student Health Services can also transfer refills from the pharmacy that originally filled the prescription. Students may also be seen by a provider at Student Health Services to obtain a prescription.

Required Health-Related Documentation

All incoming students are required to complete medical forms before arriving on-campus. Instructions for completing these forms and uploading required documents are in the New Student Forms section on the Student Health Services website. For continuity of care, students with chronic, serious medical conditions should forward their medical records to Student Health Services.

Student Health and Wellness Fee

The Student Health and Wellness fee is a mandatory fee paid per semester by all actively enrolled degree-seeking students.

This fee covers all services provided in person and through telehealth by the medical providers at Student Health Services, therapists and psychiatrists at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and by the staff at BWell Health Promotion. There are also benefits such as 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-week nursing advice, on-call physicians, and CAPS after-hours services.

Don't hesitate to call - most services are covered by the Student Health and Wellness Fee that you've already paid, regardless of your insurance.

Health Insurance

All Brown students must have separate health insurance to cover services not included in the Health Fee (such as lab, x-ray, pharmacy and hospital expenses). Students are automatically enrolled in the Brown Student Health Insurance Plan, specifically designed to complement the services provided by Student  Health & Wellness departments. However, students may waive enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan if they are covered by a comparable health insurance plan.

When evaluating your plan, you must verify that your plan provides adequate coverage that is accessible in the Providence area. Students must complete an online waiver form by the deadline listed on the Student Health Insurance website.

International Students

It is particularly important that you verify that your insurance plan is underwritten and administered in the United States and provides adequate coverage that is accessible in the Providence area before waiving the Student Health Insurance.
