He brings a sense of community around writing that has propelled students’ success forward.

Carroll shares that the Sheridan Center has been a generative and welcoming place for him ever since he was a PhD student at Brown. “I'm very glad to be able to work with colleagues in the Sheridan Center and the Graduate School to carry on this work of supporting graduate students,” says Carroll.

In his new role as the Associate Director for Graduate Student Writing, Carroll introduced two new graduate student writing communities: the Graduate Writing Collective and the Writing Challenge. “To me, the award is a sign that these programs are having a positive impact on graduate student writers,” says Carroll.

The Wilson-DeBlois Award is named in honor of George Grafton Wilson and Austen K. DeBlois, recipients of Brown’s first Doctor of Philosophy degrees in 1889. The award is given annually on behalf of all Brown doctoral students to express their appreciation for the recipient’s dedication and commitment to graduate students at Brown.

Carroll will receive the Wilson-DeBlois award at the Doctoral Ceremony on Sunday, May 24, 2024.
