Dear graduate students,

Thanks to partnership across Brown and in the community, we are pleased to share with you that 60 or more beds are available for rent by graduate students in the 2020-21 academic year. We hope that this is helpful to students who still need to secure safe, reliable, and reasonably-priced housing prior to arriving in Providence. Located on or near campus, these beds are available for a semester or year lease. For those of you arriving in September or October, we will make these available for a lease that starts then and goes through the rest of the academic year.

Brown will be assisting with the rental process, and this message is also to inform you about how that will work. We will open a Google form at 8:30am EDT on Friday, August 7, 2020 and you will need to enter some basic information about yourself and about the type of housing that you are seeking. The form will be open for 48 hours, after which representatives of the Graduate School and the School of Professional Studies will assign students to available housing (on a first-come first-served basis). You will be able to elect the type(s) of housing you would like, but you will not be able to review or specify a preference for individual units. Should you elect to lease a single bedroom in a 2-bedroom unit, we will also match you with another student expressing the same preference. Brown’s Auxiliary Housing office will then manage the process of lease signing, rent billing, and other logistical questions. Rent will be billed through your student account either in a lump sum for a semester or year, or in monthly installments.

There are four types of housing units available. Although we will ask you to express your preference, we cannot promise which unit you will get. All units will come with all utilities, including internet, and they do not require the typical month of rent upfront or credit check that a private landlord would require. Some units are fully furnished and stocked with supplies; students who are assigned to these units should need nothing other than your clothes and other personal items. With all other units, including Chestnut Commons, you will be provided with a bed, desk, chair, nightstand, and bureau.

Here are the types of housing:

1. On-campus, private bedroom in a house/apartment with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities, $900/month (occupancy limited to one person)
2. On-campus, studio, $1100/month (occupancy limited to one person)
3. On-campus, 1-bedroom apartment, $1300/month
4. On-campus, 2-bedroom apartment or house, $1700/month
5. Chestnut Commons, 1-bedroom apartment, $1400/month
6. Chestnut Commons, one bedroom in a 2-bedroom apartment, $1050/month
7. Chestnut Commons, 2-bedroom apartment, $1900/month

On the Google Form, you can indicate your need for housing, your preferences, and your need for supplies. The form will be accessible only through your Brown Google account. Units will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Brown’s Auxiliary Housing Office will follow up with information about rent and other move-in details.
