Partner Focus: Jen Kim, English Language Support Specialist, Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning

In her role, Jen Kim provides linguistic, cultural, and programmatic support for international and multilingual graduate students. Working remotely, her focus has been on individual consultations and workshops.

Kim“In my work at Brown and with graduate students, I especially appreciate the mutual learning--while I may be supporting my students with language, they are experts in their fields with knowledge that I find wildly interesting and often know little about. So, selfishly, I enjoy how much I also get to learn,” says Kim.

She stepped into her role in early February, not anticipating the dramatic changes and move to online courses and telecommuting that have since transpired. She has been impressed by how thoughtful the Brown community is in their communication and approaches.

Kim started her teaching career in Rhode Island and thinks “Providence is such a cool little city.” She is grateful for the opportunity to return after most recently teaching abroad at a university in Seoul, South Korea. Kim has a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and a Master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

“Building relationships, sharing in life and learning moments, and witnessing progress and growth have been my favorite parts of working with students throughout my career,” says Kim.

English Language Support is currently offering two virtual options for individual language appointments. Graduate students can visit the Sheridan Center’s ELS Individual Support webpage for more information or email jen_kim@brown.edu.
