Master’s Student Focus: Benkuan Xiong, Data Science

Ben is from Hunan province in China and received his bachelor's degree in Physics from Tsinghua University in Beijing.

BenMy time at Brown has been excellent. I've had the privilege of meeting talented peers and amazing teachers. I feel that Brown does its best to help us design our own education by giving us a lot of free rein. As an international student, I also owe many thanks to the staff members at Brown, who have been very helpful in making my transition smooth and enjoyable. Providence is a beautiful little city, very different from its Chinese counterparts. I love the style of architecture and the rhythm of life here.

I chose the master's program in Data Science because I want to do work that has prompt and powerful applications in the real world. I began handling large data sets in my junior year, and I've been fascinated ever since by how much information they can convey.

After graduation, I hope to do something related to social sciences with my graduate education. To me, human activity has always been fascinating and informative. In a way, I feel that it helps us be more introspective regarding our own behavior.
