Graduate School

For graduate students regarding the transition to remote education

You will have read in the letter that graduate students may continue to conduct on-campus research, including working in libraries and labs. Graduate student teaching assistants, fellows and instructors will be expected to continue with their teaching using remote learning. If you have not done so already, please read the president's email closely.

We write to follow up on the recent messages sent regarding Brown University's continued preparedness, action and response to COVID-19. This email answers immediate questions you may have after reading President Paxson’s email this morning outlining that all courses for graduate students will be offered remotely beginning on Monday, March 30.

Supporting your well-being and academic success continues to be a top priority of the Graduate School. We know that many graduate students have questions about coursework, research, teaching and the planning of future academic travel, as well as personal travel. We also know you will have many questions unique to your individual circumstances and program. To address these concerns, we will be providing additional guidance, including an online FAQ, as soon as possible.

For now, please note:

  • The University remains open and operational.
  • Your student health insurance coverage will continue.
  • All PhD and MFA students will continue to receive their funding.
  • Graduate students are not restricted from campus.
  • Guidance from the University for Ensuring Continuity in Teaching and Learning is available for course instructors, teaching assistants and fellows, including a new Remote Teaching & Learning page on Brown’s COVID-19 website.
  • Academic deadlines remain in place (including dissertation and thesis submission deadlines, grading and exam deadlines).

The Graduate School and Brown University will remain open and staffed, and we are able to meet with you virtually and/or answer questions and provide student support via email at Graduate_School@Brown.edu or phone at 401-863-2600.

Sincerely,

Andrew G. Campbell
