Master's Student Focus: Alexander Berry, Data Science

Alex is from Niskayuna, NY, a small town near the state capital of Albany and he graduated from Middlebury College with a bachelor of arts degree in computer science and history.

BerryMy year at Brown so far has been a whirlwind of learning, both in and out of the classroom. I have been challenged and impressed with the depth and breadth of my program’s curriculum and I am grateful for the friendly and hardworking faculty members and fellow students. I have also been getting to know my way around Providence and discovering the best places to get lunch around campus!

I am pursuing a master’s degree because I want to build on my undergraduate education and specialize my knowledge and skills in data science. My background in computer science gave me a strong foundation in the field, but the relatively new and rapidly-changing nature of data science as a distinct academic discipline and career path meant that a master’s program would provide me with an advanced and comprehensive education that would satisfy my intellectual curiosity and open innumerable doors for my career.

There is an ever-growing number of disciplines which are incorporating data science and computational analysis techniques. I am most interested in applying the knowledge and skills I am learning at Brown to agriculture, education, environmental monitoring and conservation, medicine, and urban planning. I may want to pursue a PhD later on, but for the moment I am excited to start my career in industry.
