Partner Spotlight: Kristy Kumar

Kumar is the Assistant Director for Co-Curricular Initiatives, Brown Center for Students of Color.

KumarIn this role, Kumar collaborates with students, faculty, staff and alumni to enhance Brown’s excellence through equity and justice. She oversees the Latinx, Black, and Asian American student initiatives, as well as supports the Graduate Student of Color Initiative.

“What's particularly refreshing for me is working at a Center that is actively operationalizing social justice concepts. We're having authentic conversations around how to actually practice (not merely intellectualize) reducing hierarchies, celebrating joy, addressing harm and accountability in communities of color and prioritizing wellness,” says Kumar.

Her priorities are to support building community and critical consciousness for students of color by creating channels for visibility, wellness and advocacy.

Kumar comes to Brown from Colorado State University where she was the Assistant Director of Educational Programs at the Women and Gender Advocacy Center. She received her Master’s in Human Rights focusing on race, gender, and equity from the University of Denver and an undergraduate degree in Political Science and Global Poverty and Practices from the University of California, Berkeley. She was also a Fulbright Scholar in Malaysia and has a background in anti-violence education. Kumar says, “I'm new to Providence, I welcome any and all food recommendations in the area!”
