Funding Extension FAQs

Brown University is committed to supporting graduate students through a challenging period. The most commonly asked questions about extended funding related to the COVID-19 pandemic are shared on this page. If you have additional questions, please email Graduate_Dean@brown.edu.

Please write to graduate_dean@brown.edu with the subject line “Spring 2024 COVID-19 Appointment Extension Application” to indicate that you would like to apply. We will review our records to confirm that you are eligible to apply in the Spring 2024 cycle. We will then give you access to the appropriate application in UFunds.

The Graduate Schools reviews applications in the order received. Thus, applying early will enable us to respond to you faster. In some instances, we require additional information from you, your advisor, or DGS, which can extend the processing time. We strongly encourage you and your recommenders to be as clear as possible about the nature of the delay you experienced, which milestones you missed and by how much, what you did to make up for lost time, how far along you are in your dissertation, and how much additional time you need.

Yes. Please write to graduate_dean@brown.edu with details on the timeline for your visa renewal process. We will accelerate your review appropriately.

You will be notified with an email from ufunds@brown.edu with a decision and, if approved, details of the extension.

No. The purpose of the extended funding is to support students whose progress toward completion of the degree was delayed as a consequence of the pandemic. Successful applications must justify the need for extended time in relation to unavoidable delays caused by the pandemic. In other cases, applications that do not sufficiently justify the length of the requested extension may be approved for less time than requested.

Yes. Students receiving extended support due to the impact of Covid will be appointed as a TA, RA, or Proctor in consultation with your PhD program.

Please email graduate_dean@brown.edu. We will review our records and add you to the appropriate application. Please note that there are two different applications, which are tailored to different cohorts. We have introduced an extra step in order to ensure that you submit the correct application based on your cohort.
