Since stepping into her role in fall 2023, Laferriere has transformed the doctoral student experience through a combination of personal attention and systematic support. Her approach began immediately upon arrival, when she scheduled individual meetings with every doctoral student in the department to understand their needs and concerns.

Building Community and Connection

Laferriere's commitment to student engagement extends beyond one-time meetings. She organizes weekly "lunch and chat" sessions where students can drop by with questions or simply connect with peers over a meal. She also conducts regular office hours specifically devoted to PhD student concerns.

"She puts in so much energy into ensuring that our department is running smoothly, and most importantly, that people feel heard," says doctoral candidate Nicole Giron. “In particular, she strives to elevate student voices and makes us feel like we have a seat at the table. She actively seeks ways to make sure we have what we need, whether it be related to coursework, research assistantships, conferences, or even personal support.”

Doctoral candidate Tony Roberts credits Laferriere with "creating a safe and comfortable forum for questions and issues to be freely discussed." He adds, “Her openness and willingness to be available for students have been of immediate, deeply positive impact on our graduate experience.”

Streamlining Administrative Processes

Beyond fostering community, Laferriere has tackled the administrative challenges that often burden graduate students. She maintains transparency in doctoral funding processes, ensuring students are fully informed about their funding sources and options. Her careful management of financial matters and reimbursements has particularly benefited students attending conferences.

"Under Rebecca's care, reimbursements have been timely, transparent, and straightforward, allowing us students to concentrate on our academics and research," Roberts explains.

Attention to Detail

Laferriere's dedication extends to the smallest details that make students feel valued. While managing the needs of more than 80 people in her department—including both students and faculty—she has memorized everyone's food allergies and ensures that all meals and events include ample options with clear labeling.

The Wilson DeBlois Award recognizes staff members who demonstrate exceptional commitment to supporting graduate students, making Laferriere's selection a fitting tribute to her comprehensive approach to student care.
